Anil Kesani, MD, describes the issue as one that is extremely common and experienced by a majority of people at some point in their lives. Neck pain can be caused by a number of causes including trauma that can result in fractures, pulled muscles and inflammation of the muscles. Degenerative conditions can result in disc degeneration, disc herniation, facet joint arthritis and bone spurs. Rarer causes include tumors, autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. Ultimately this can result in neck pain as well as pinched nerves that cause neck mobility issues and pain that radiates down the arms.
It is vitally important to accurately diagnose the reason for the patient’s neck pain in order to accurately treat the patient’s pain i.e an accurate diagnosis and treatment of neck pain. This is achieved with a detailed history and physical examination including checking for a neurologic deficits. Confirmation of diagnosis can be achieved with X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs.
For most patients, treatment is nonsurgical in the form of physical therapy, medications, and in certain cases spinal injections. Most surgeons like Dr. Anil Kesani reserve surgical treatment as a last resort in those “rare few” cases where nonoperative treatment fails. Therefore, an accurate diagnosis and treatment of neck pain will result in patients doing well with the best pain reduction.
