Dr. Anil Kesani explains that neck pain can have a variety of causes including trauma, degenerative conditions, structural changes to the spine as well as pinched nerve roots and spinal cord.  Dr. Anil Kesani also explains that the key is accurate diagnosis and treatment of neck pain.

Anil Kumar Kesani, M.D is a respected presence in the Dallas Fort Worth medical community who provides a variety of spine surgery options for those living with persistent neck and back pain issues at his practice SpineMD. Please watch Dr. Kesani’s YouTube video on breaking down the symptoms of neck pain below.

Anil Kesani, MD, describes the issue as one that is extremely common and experienced by a majority of people at some point in their lives. Neck pain can be caused by a number of causes including trauma that can result in fractures, pulled muscles and inflammation of the muscles. Degenerative conditions can result in disc degeneration, disc herniation, facet joint arthritis and bone spurs.  Rarer causes include tumors, autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.  Ultimately this can result in neck pain as well as pinched nerves that cause neck mobility issues and pain that radiates down the arms.

It is vitally important to accurately diagnose the reason for the patient’s neck pain in order to accurately treat the patient’s pain i.e an accurate diagnosis and treatment of neck pain.  This is achieved with a detailed history and physical examination including checking for a neurologic deficits.  Confirmation of diagnosis can be achieved with X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs.

For most patients, treatment is nonsurgical in the form of physical therapy, medications, and in certain cases spinal injections. Most surgeons like Dr. Anil Kesani reserve surgical treatment as a last resort in those “rare few” cases where nonoperative treatment fails.  Therefore, an accurate diagnosis and treatment of neck pain will result in patients doing well with the best pain reduction.

Dr. Anil Kesani explains the causes of radiculopathy that it occurs when a nerve root in the spine is either compressed and/or irritated.  A member of the North American Spine Society or commonly abbreviated to NASS, Anil Kumar Kesani MD is a former orthopedic and spine surgeon at Southland Orthopedics LTD in Olympia Fields, Illinois. Dr. Anil Kesani’s approach to treatment is detailed at myspinemd.com/physicians.  Dr. Kesani is experienced in treating spine problems such as stenosis and radiculopathy.

Causes of Radiculopathy

The typical causes of radiculopathy or for the nerve root compression or irritation typically results from adjacent intervertebral disk problems, which may occur due to injury, degenerative or arthritic reasons or in some cases due to no apparent reason. Radiculopathy results in uncomfortable symptoms such as pain, numbness, and weakness of the affected area.

Depending on where the compression occurs, radiculopathy can be categorized into three main types: cervical, thoracic, and lumbar.

Risk Factors for Radiculopathy

Tumors of the spine, bone spurs, spinal arthritis, scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, and diabetes are common risk factors associated with radiculopathy.  Excessive weight, poor posture, age, and repetitive motions also can be contributing factors.

Cauda Equina Syndrome

Cauda equina syndrome is a condition that is caused by severe compression of spinal nerve roots within the lumbar spine.  Typically it is a result of a very large disc herniation.  Cauda equina syndrome affects the lower extremities of the body, the pelvic organs, as well as can cause lower extremity radiculopathy.  It is considered an emergency situation and requires emergency surgery to prevent paralysis.  Symptoms caused include severe back and leg pain, weakness, bowel and or bladder incontinence, and an inability to urinate.

Please call SpineMD on (817) 893 6001 and make an appointment to see Dr. Anil Kesani if you are concerned that you are affected by cauda equina syndrome.

Dr. Anil Kesani explains that Sacroiliitis or Sacroiliac joint pain is a common cause of ongoing lower back pain.  Anil Kesani MD who is the founder of SpineMD and a orthopedic spine surgeon performs minimally-invasive and nonsurgical treatments to relieve pain symptoms caused by spinal conditions.

Dr. Anil Kesani counsels patients managing chronic issues such as sacroiliitis or sacroiliac joint pain.  In this condition, the joints that connect the sacrum to the pelvis become inflamed. As a result, individuals may feel pain from their lower back down to the back of their legs.

The pain is often aggravated by sitting for long periods of time, sleeping on your belly or certain actions such as running or going up stairs. Some people may also experience fevers or lower body stiffness if associated with autoimmune or infectious conditions.

Chronic illnesses that impact these sacroiliac joints, such as arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, a condition that affects the lower body specifically, are the major causes of sacroiliac joint pain. However, some conditions, such as pregnancy or severe trauma from a car accident or fall, can also damage the sacroiliac joints. In very rare cases, the joints can become infected with a strain of staph bacteria.

Treatment of Sacroiliitis

Sacroiliitis is a common source of debilitating lower back pain. Frequently sacroiliac joint injections are used in conjunction with other forms nonsurgical treatments such as physical therapy and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory medications in order to treat sacroiliitis.
